Zack Snyder Eyes New Batman Film Adaptation of Dark Knight Returns

Zack Snyder has announced that he is still pursuing a film adaptation of Frank Miller’s 1986 graphic novel *The Dark Knight Returns*, despite recent setbacks at DC Studios. In a Variety interview promoting his forthcoming feature *The Last Photograph*, Snyder explained that the novel’s grim vision of an aging Batman emerging from retirement in a dystopian Gotham represents, for him, a “complete cycle of the superhero comic book medium” when paired with *Watchmen*. He noted that the story is “outside of the DC Universe” in that it is a novel that simply happens to feature superheroes, which he believes gives him more creative freedom.

The announcement comes as DC Studios, now headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is developing two new Batman projects that diverge from Snyder’s earlier vision. After his previous Batman and Superman films were shelved, Snyder has expressed determination to bring Miller’s classic tale to the screen. While the studio’s current slate focuses on a different direction for the iconic hero, Snyder’s continued interest in *The Dark Knight Returns* underscores his enduring commitment to reimagining the superhero genre.
