The encounter, described by Rodríguez as “historic,” follows a recently negotiated oil agreement that would allow the United States to purchase up to 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan crude. The meeting took place late on Tuesday at a five‑star hotel approximately seven miles from the Brooklyn correctional facility where former president Nicolás Maduro has been detained since a special‑forces raid on Caracas resulted in his capture.

Rodríguez did not indicate whether she plans to visit Maduro in prison, and the United States has not commented on any forthcoming diplomatic engagement with the jailed leader. The oil deal and the high‑profile meeting occur amid heightened international scrutiny of Venezuela’s political transition and the legal status of its former president.
