UN chief warns of four global challenges shaping future cooperation

The United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres warned the General Assembly on Tuesday that humanity is confronting four defining “tests of power” that will shape the planet’s trajectory. He identified the challenges as the balance between war and peace, rising inequality, the accelerating climate crisis, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence, noting that the world’s response will determine whether a new era of cooperation emerges or deeper division takes hold.

Guterres outlined each test: ongoing armed conflicts and fragile peace processes risk destabilising regions; widening economic and social gaps threaten social cohesion and inclusive growth; unchecked greenhouse‑gas emissions and extreme weather events intensify pressure on vulnerable populations; and the unchecked deployment of AI raises concerns about governance, ethics, and security. He emphasized that these issues are interlinked, with progress—or setbacks—in one area influencing the others, and called for coordinated multilateral action to address them comprehensively.

In concluding his remarks, the Secretary‑General urged member states to translate the Assembly’s commitments into concrete policies, strengthen international institutions, and foster collaborative frameworks that can manage these pivotal challenges. He stressed that the collective ability to meet the four tests will define the global order for generations to come.
