UK Prime Minister Burnham denounces Russian electoral interference at UN

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to condemn Russia for what he described as a coordinated “information warfare” campaign aimed at destabilising democratic institutions and obscuring the realities of the conflict in Ukraine. In his speech, Burnham cited a surge in disinformation across social media platforms, state‑run outlets and covert online networks that he said sought to manipulate public opinion and undermine international law, urging member states to adopt stronger safeguards against hostile propaganda.

The prime minister called on the UN to develop a unified response, including enhanced monitoring of digital channels and greater cooperation with technology firms to identify and remove false narratives. He emphasized that transparent, fact‑based communication is essential for maintaining global security and urged Russia to cease its alleged activities, warning that continued violations would further erode trust in multilateral institutions. The remarks were met with limited immediate comment from the Russian delegation, while several countries signalled support for coordinated efforts to counter disinformation.
