Type 1 Diabetics Can Run Marathons Safely, Study Finds
A new study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Milan, held from September 28 to October 2, demonstrates that runners with type 1 diabetes can safely complete a marathon while achieving finishing times comparable to non‑diabetic athletes. The research, showcased to an international audience of endocrinologists and sports medicine specialists, highlights the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology in managing glycaemic variability during prolonged endurance exercise.
In the study, a cohort of type 1 diabetic marathoners used CGM devices to track real‑time glucose levels throughout the race. The data revealed that participants maintained glucose concentrations within target ranges for the majority of the event, with only a few instances of hypoglycaemia that were promptly addressed using CGM alerts and carbohydrate intake. Average finish times for the diabetic group were statistically indistinguishable from those of a matched control group of non‑diabetic runners, underscoring the effectiveness of CGM in facilitating performance without compromising safety.
These findings suggest that with appropriate glucose monitoring and management strategies, individuals with type 1 diabetes can pursue marathon training and competition at levels previously considered risky. The study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the integration of CGM into athletic planning for people with diabetes and may inform future guidelines for endurance sports participation.
