Students Describe New Proto-Amphibian Species Named After Their Mothers

Two student scientists from the Field Museum have described a new species of proto-amphibian discovered in one of the richest Carboniferous period fossil deposits near Chicago. The area, which was a swampy river delta approximately 309 million years ago, was once home to early land-dwelling animals, giant insects, and strange swimming animals. The students named the newly identified animal in honor of their mothers, both of whom are named Jean.

This discovery adds to the record of life that flourished and evolved in the region long before the dinosaurs. The students’ work highlights the significance of the site as a source of ancient fossils, with the new species serving as a tribute to their families.
