Speed, finance and cooperation essential to limit climate overshoot

The latest assessments from climate experts indicate that a temporary overshoot of the 1.5 °C warming limit established by the Paris Agreement is now viewed as unavoidable. Global temperature trajectories suggest that, without immediate and unprecedented mitigation, the world will exceed the target before a return to lower levels can be achieved.

Policy makers are urged to limit the magnitude and duration of the overshoot by accelerating emissions reductions, mobilising additional climate finance, and deepening international collaboration. Faster decarbonisation of energy systems, expanded funding for low‑carbon technologies, and coordinated regulatory frameworks are identified as critical levers to bring temperatures back within the agreed threshold and to minimise associated climate risks.
