Slam Frank Musical Reimagines Anne Frank as Pansexual Rapper

The 2025 off-Broadway musical Slam Frank has emerged as a highly sought-after ticket, reimagining Anne Frank as a pansexual Latina rapper named Anita. The production employs a show-within-a-show structure in which a progressive theatre company attempts to modernize the Holocaust victim’s story by paralleling it with the struggles of marginalized people today. In this version, Anita’s mother is Black, her father is neurodivergent, and the family is portrayed as immigrants while hiding in Amsterdam.

Creator Andrew Fox acknowledges the temptation to categorize the work as anti-woke art but cautions against one-note interpretations, noting that the show’s fans and detractors fall across every conceivable party line. Fox states that the piece aims to grapple with the last 15 years of cultural and intellectual upheaval and extract comedy from the situation. The production has generated significant controversy even before its first performance, with reports that audience members have walked out during the show.
