Short Strength Training Shrinks Fat Cells in Obese Mice
Researchers at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) have shown that a brief period of strength training can accelerate the breakdown of visceral fat in obese mice, even before any measurable weight loss occurs. In a controlled experiment, the animals were subjected to a seven‑day regimen of resistance exercise, after which scientists noted significant metabolic changes in the tissues surrounding the intestines.
The study found that the short training period activated cellular pathways associated with lipolysis, leading to a reduction in fat cell size and a measurable decrease in abdominal fat deposits. These findings suggest that strength training can initiate fat‑burning mechanisms independently of overall body weight changes, highlighting a potential early therapeutic benefit for obesity management.
While the research was conducted in mice, the results underscore the importance of resistance exercise as a rapid strategy to target visceral adiposity. Further studies will be needed to determine whether similar effects can be replicated in humans and to explore the underlying mechanisms in greater detail.
