Russia funds bomb shelter repairs after drone attacks

Tens of millions of roubles have been earmarked for the repair and reinforcement of emergency shelters in Moscow’s districts and the metro stations of St. Petersburg following a Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian refinery on Sunday. The allocation, announced by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, is part of a broader effort to strengthen civil defence infrastructure amid ongoing aerial attacks.

The refinery, located in the western region of Russia, sustained significant damage when a drone penetrated its perimeter, prompting an emergency response and a subsequent assessment of the facility’s safety protocols. In the same week, several other Russian refineries and industrial sites have reported drone incursions, underscoring the heightened risk to critical infrastructure as the conflict in Ukraine enters its fifth year.

The Kremlin has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding civilian infrastructure while continuing its military operations in Ukraine. The repair funds are intended to upgrade blast‑resistant features and emergency evacuation routes, aiming to reduce civilian casualties and maintain essential services during the conflict’s prolonged escalation.
