Exposure to hazardous chemicals is a significant public health challenge that contributes to noncommunicable diseases, yet most chemicals found in consumer products like food packaging lack the data necessary to confirm their safety. Current testing methods are limited in their ability to assess all potential health outcomes, as many requirements focus solely on genotoxicity and evaluate one substance at a time. These approaches fail to account for evidence indicating that consumers are simultaneously exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals from various products.

Researchers have made progress in mapping these chemicals to six groups of common diseases, addressing the gap left by existing single-substance testing protocols. This development aims to better understand the health impacts of complex chemical mixtures that current standards do not effectively capture. The work highlights the need for more comprehensive data to determine the safety of chemicals prevalent in everyday consumer items.
