Qatar Prime Minister calls for Gulf security framework involving Iran

Doha – Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said the Gulf region will not return to a stable, cooperative footing unless the member states adopt a comprehensive framework that guarantees none of them poses a threat to the others. Speaking at a regional security forum on Thursday, Al Thani emphasized that mutual security assurances are essential for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to function effectively and to prevent further diplomatic rifts that have emerged over the past few years.

Al Thani’s remarks come amid lingering tensions between Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, as well as broader concerns about Iran’s influence and the impact of external powers on regional stability. He called for a formalized mechanism—potentially involving confidence‑building measures, joint monitoring and dispute‑resolution protocols—to replace ad‑hoc arrangements and to reassure all parties that their sovereignty and security will be respected. The prime minister concluded that establishing such a framework is a prerequisite for renewed economic integration and political cohesion across the Gulf.
