Olive ridley turtles nest on Seal and Huntington Beach in California

A female olive ridley sea turtle emerged from the surf along southern California’s coastline last weekend around sunset, and was observed laying eggs in the sand. The sighting occurred on Seal and Huntington Beaches, where the turtle’s presence sparked surprise and excitement among beachgoers.

Scientists are now questioning whether these nestings represent a freak occurrence or the beginning of a broader trend. “And they weren’t the only ones freaking out,” said Justin Viezbicke, the California stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (Noaa), noting the widespread reaction to the unexpected nesting event.
