Nepal seeks climate justice and compensation after August floods

Kathmandu’s environment ministry has formally requested compensation from the United Nations‑backed Loss and Damage Fund, citing the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal in August. Environment Minister Geeta Chaudhary told Deutsche Welle that the country is still grappling with widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure and agricultural land, and that the financial assistance is essential for rebuilding and for addressing the broader climate‑related vulnerabilities exposed by the disaster.

The appeal aligns with a growing global push for climate justice, as nations most affected by extreme weather events seek support from the newly established fund, which is intended to help vulnerable states recover from loss and damage that cannot be mitigated through adaptation alone. Nepal’s request underscores the urgency of operationalising the fund’s mechanisms and highlights the need for swift international cooperation to aid communities still reeling from the August floods.
