NASA Perseverance captures 360-degree panorama of Turquoise Bay on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance rover captured a 360‑degree natural‑color panorama of “Turquoise Bay,” a geologically significant site within the rover’s Margin Unit, using its Mastcam‑Z camera system. The expansive view was assembled from 818 individual images taken over an eleven‑day period from Oct. 5 to Oct. 16, 2023, corresponding to sols 933 through 944 of the mission on the Martian surface. The panorama provides a detailed look at the layered sedimentary rocks and erosional features that scientists hope will shed light on the planet’s ancient environmental conditions.

The imagery, released as part of NASA’s ongoing effort to document and analyze Mars’ terrain, will be used to guide future investigations of the Margin Unit and to support the selection of sampling sites for the rover’s drill and cache operations. By delivering a high‑resolution, immersive view of Turquoise Bay, the panorama enhances the mission’s scientific dataset and contributes to the broader understanding of Mars’ geological history.
