MRI use before prostate biopsies rises sharply in U.S. hospitals

Prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed prior to biopsy is emerging as a pivotal step in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Recent randomized trials have demonstrated that initiating the diagnostic pathway with MRI and subsequently targeting suspicious lesions yields a higher detection rate of clinically significant, aggressive tumors compared to traditional systematic biopsy alone.

The accumulating evidence has prompted guideline committees to progressively strengthen their recommendations for pre‑biopsy MRI. By identifying lesions that warrant focused sampling, the approach reduces the likelihood of missing high‑grade cancers while potentially decreasing unnecessary biopsies of indolent disease, marking a notable advancement in prostate cancer screening and management.
