Macron urges EU to act on rising energy prices

Paris – French President Emmanuel Macron has sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging the bloc to take swift measures to curb soaring energy prices. In his correspondence, Macron highlighted the sharp increase in costs driven by the widening conflict in the Middle East and by Ukraine’s recent strikes on Russian diesel refineries, which have tightened supply and heightened market volatility across the continent.

The French leader’s appeal comes as EU officials assess coordinated responses, including possible temporary subsidies, strategic reserve releases and regulatory adjustments aimed at stabilising the market. Von der Leyen is expected to address the issue in upcoming discussions with member states, with the goal of mitigating the impact on households and industry while maintaining the Union’s energy security objectives.
