Journalist Dimitry Elias Léger discusses Death of the Soccer God and Haitian diaspora

Eve Irvine welcomed journalist and author Dimitry Elias Léger as he presented his new book, Death of the Soccer God. The work opens with a little‑known episode in sports history: Haitian‑born Joe Gaetjens scoring the goal that secured the United States’ famous victory over England at the 1950 World Cup. Léger frames the episode as a “jumping point” for a broader inquiry rather than a straightforward biography of Gaetjens.

In the book, Léger pays homage to the Haitian diaspora and “those who go back & do their best,” using Gaetjens’s journey to examine themes of diaspora, fame, mortality and moral responsibility. He argues that success offers neither immunity from history nor escape from death, noting, “You could be super famous and end up on death row” or die wealthy in your own bed: “Either way, you’re going to die.” The book uses Joe Gaetjens’s story to explore diaspora, fame, mortality and moral responsibility.
