Ineos halts UK plant production over high gas costs

Ineos, the multinational chemicals manufacturer, reported that the price of natural gas in the United Kingdom is roughly twelve times higher than the cost of the same commodity in the United States. The company highlighted the disparity during a briefing on its energy procurement strategy, noting that the elevated UK gas prices have significantly increased production costs for energy‑intensive industries.

The price gap, according to Ineos, stems from a combination of factors including the United Kingdom’s reliance on imported gas, higher carbon taxes, and limited domestic storage capacity, whereas the United States benefits from abundant shale gas supplies and a more competitive market structure. Ineos said the steep cost differential is prompting the firm to explore alternative energy sources and to reassess its long‑term fuel contracts to mitigate the impact on its operating margins.
