Human brain shown to develop from two distinct cellular systems

Scientists have uncovered that the human brain originates from two separate cellular systems, indicating that evolution merged two ancient nervous structures with distinct functions. The finding, reported by a team of developmental biologists, reveals that one system gives rise to the forebrain and midbrain while the other forms the hindbrain, a region responsible for vital autonomic processes such as breathing and heart rate regulation.

By isolating the hindbrain‑specific lineage, researchers were able to cultivate functional hindbrain neurons in vitro for the first time.
