France expands targeted fuel price relief with €450 million boost

Paris – Facing surging fuel prices that are straining both businesses and workers, the French government announced on Tuesday an expansion of its targeted energy relief programme. The new package, earmarked at €450 million, will augment existing support measures and bring the total assistance allocated to €1.4 billion. The additional funds are intended to offset higher operating costs for small and medium‑sized enterprises and to provide direct subsidies to low‑income households most vulnerable to the price spike, the ministry said.

In a related move, President Emmanuel Macron urged the government to permit a higher share of biofuels in diesel blends, arguing that the shift could alleviate the immediate fuel‑price pressure. Environmental analyst Dr. Claire Dupont cautioned that a rapid increase in biofuel use may generate mixed ecological outcomes, noting that while biofuels can reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions from transport, large‑scale production could intensify land‑use change and biodiversity loss if not carefully managed.
