FAU researchers develop AI imaging to detect skin cancer before visible signs
Diagnosing skin tumors has traditionally depended on the identification of visible alterations in the skin, with Line‑Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC‑OCT) serving as a well‑established imaging method for this purpose. Researchers at Friedrich‑Alexander‑Universität Erlangen‑Nürnberg (FAU), led by Dr. Moritz Ronicke of the Department of Dermatology at Uniklinikum Erlangen, have now introduced a novel diagnostic approach that builds on the capabilities of LC‑OCT.
The new technique seeks to enhance the precision of tumor assessment while potentially reducing reliance on invasive biopsies. By refining image acquisition and analysis, the FAU team aims to provide clinicians with more detailed information about tumor morphology at an earlier stage. If validated in clinical settings, the approach could streamline dermatological workflows and improve patient outcomes through faster, more accurate diagnosis.
