Estrogen receptor alpha identified as protector of right heart in pulmonary hypertension

Researchers at National Jewish Health have uncovered a mechanistic role for estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in safeguarding the right ventricle of the heart under conditions of pulmonary hypertension. The preclinical study, conducted in animal models, demonstrated that activation of ERα preserves the survival and migratory capacity of endothelial cells that line the pulmonary vasculature, thereby maintaining the microvascular network essential for right‑heart function.

The findings suggest that ERα‑mediated endothelial protection may counteract the vascular rarefaction and right‑ventricular failure that characterize advanced pulmonary hypertension. By sustaining endothelial cell viability and movement, ERα helps the stressed heart retain the small vessels required for adequate blood flow. The research provides a potential therapeutic target for mitigating right‑side heart damage in patients with pulmonary hypertension, pending further clinical investigation.
