Ebola vaccine trial starts in DRC outbreak area

Health workers in several provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo have begun a test vaccination program aimed at curbing a deadly Ebola outbreak that has claimed numerous lives. Launched on Saturday, the initiative administers vaccines originally developed for a different Ebola virus strain to assess whether they can provide protection against the current outbreak, which is caused by the Makona variant.

The emergency response, coordinated by the Ministry of Health and supported by the World Health Organization, targets frontline medical personnel who are at highest risk of exposure. Officials hope that early immunization will reduce transmission among health workers and provide data on cross‑strain vaccine efficacy, informing broader containment strategies if the trial proves successful.
