DOJ defends Trump’s White House media ban as a national security measure

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has reaffirmed President Donald J. Trump’s decision to bar the news outlets CNN, MS Now and Politico from the White House, arguing that access to the executive compound is a privilege that can be restricted on national‑security grounds. In a filing submitted to U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly on Tuesday, the DOJ reiterated that the ban was imposed to protect sensitive information and that the President’s authority to limit media access remains intact.

The DOJ’s brief urged Judge Kelly to dismiss a motion that sought to compel the White House to allow the three outlets to return to the complex. The motion, filed by the outlets’ legal teams, argued that the ban violated First‑Amendment rights and that no national‑security threat had been demonstrated. The DOJ countered that the President’s discretion in matters of security outweighs the media’s claims and that the ban is consistent with existing precedent on restricted access.

The court is expected to consider the DOJ’s arguments before deciding whether the ban can be lifted. The decision will clarify the extent to which the President may limit media presence at the White House under the guise of national security.
