CNN, Politico and MS NOW Sue Trump Administration Over White House Credential Revocation

U.S. media organizations CNN, Politico and MS NOW have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after the White House withdrew their press credentials and barred the outlets from covering events on the premises. The three outlets allege that the revocation, issued without prior notice or an opportunity to contest the decision, violates constitutional protections for the press and infringes upon established federal guidelines governing credentialing. Their complaint seeks reinstatement of access, a declaration that the administration’s actions were unlawful, and damages for the loss of reporting opportunities.

In an interview with France 24, Steven Herman, executive director of the Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation at the University of Mississippi, said the move raises significant legal questions about the scope of executive authority over press access. Herman noted that while the White House retains discretion to manage security and space, that discretion does not extend to suppressing coverage based on editorial content, and courts have historically upheld the press’s right to equal treatment under the First Amendment. He warned that the case could set a precedent affecting how future administrations handle media credentials, potentially reshaping the balance between governmental control and press freedom.
