Beyer Calls on FAA to Suspend AI System at DC Airports

Rep. Don Beyer (D‑Va.) has urged the Trump administration to stop the Federal Aviation Administration’s rollout of a new artificial‑intelligence system intended to reduce flight delays and cancellations. Beyer said the FAA is deploying the technology without adequate safety testing or clear assurances that it will not compromise passenger security.

The AI tool, developed in partnership with private contractors, is designed to optimize flight scheduling, gate assignments, and crew rotations in real time. Critics argue that the system’s rapid deployment could introduce unforeseen glitches that might affect air traffic control, maintenance procedures, or emergency response protocols. Beyer called for a pause until independent safety reviews are completed and for the administration to provide transparent data on the system’s performance.

Beyer’s request comes amid growing scrutiny of the FAA’s use of emerging technologies. If the administration does not address the safety concerns, the AI initiative could face legal challenges from aviation stakeholders and may delay the projected benefits of smoother air travel operations.
