Air Pollution Linked to Higher Glaucoma and Cataract Risk
A large epidemiological study presented at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) has found a significant association between high ambient air pollution and the development of glaucoma and cataracts. The research, which surveyed thousands of participants across several European countries, indicates that individuals residing in areas with elevated levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are at a higher risk of these sight‑threatening conditions.
The investigators analyzed data from over 50,000 adults, comparing eye‑health outcomes with regional air‑quality indices obtained from national monitoring stations. After adjusting for age, smoking status, and socioeconomic factors, the study reported a 15‑20 % increase in glaucoma incidence and a 12‑18 % rise in cataract cases in the most polluted regions. The findings suggest that chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide may contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation within ocular tissues, thereby accelerating disease progression.
