Afghan cyclist Fariba Hashimi wins silver at Asian Games

Afghan cyclist Fariba Hashimi captured the silver medal in the women’s road race at the Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China, on Saturday. Competing against a field of 30 riders from across the continent, Hashimi finished 12 seconds behind the gold‑medalist from Japan, marking the highest placement ever for an Afghan woman in the event. The 24‑year‑old, who now trains with the Iranian national team, posted a time of 3:45:27 for the 120‑kilometre course, overtaking several higher‑ranked competitors in the final sprint.

Hashimi’s achievement follows her departure from Afghanistan in 2022 after the Taliban’s resurgence imposed severe restrictions on women’s participation in sports. After seeking asylum in Iran, she resumed cycling under the guidance of a former national coach and secured a place on the Asian Games roster through a wildcard entry.
